Treating Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is a normal and healthy bodily function because it cools you down and prevents you from overheating.  However, there is a point when sweating can become excessive and interfere with your daily activities.  If you notice that you sweat excessively from your hands, feet, or under arms at least once a week, then you may want to schedule a visit with your dermatologist to determine if you have hyperhidrosis.  If excessive sweating disrupts your daily routine and causes you social anxiety, then you may want to seek professional help immediately.  Luckily, there are few simple tips for treating hyperhidrosis.

Prescription Antiperspirant

Once you see a dermatologist to treat your excessive sweating, one of the first treatments they may recommend is a prescription antiperspirant.  Antiperspirants plug your sweat glands when you sweat and signal to your body to stop producing sweat. Your dermatologist may instruct you to apply the product to the affected areas before you go to bed, then wash it off once you wake up in the morning. Many prescription antiperspirants contain aluminum chloride, which in some cases can cause irritation. If you notice your skin becoming irritated, let your dermatologist know as changing the way you use the product may help reduce these side effects.

Botox

Your dermatologist can administer botox to your underarms to treat hyperhidrosis.  The treatment is designed to temporarily blocks a chemical that signals the body to produce sweat.  The affected area will be iced and anesthetized first before receiving several injections. Each treatment can last four to six months or longer before it needs to be administered again.
