If you happen to have eczema, it is important to note that you are not alone.  According to the National Association of Eczema, the skin disorder affects over 30 million people in the United States.  If you have eczema, you will likely show symptoms such as dry, itchy patches of skins that can range from red to dark tones.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to treat and manage the symptoms of eczema.

Prescription Topical

Depending on the severity of your eczema, your dermatologist might recommend a prescription topical medication to treat your specific case.  There are a wide range of medications on the market including steroids and skin barrier creams. Your doctor will recommend a treatment depending on the severity of each symptom.  So, if your eczema is extremely red, they may recommend a medication to treat the redness.

Moisturize

One of the most important elements of treating eczema is to moisturize your skin on a daily basis.  Many people who have eczema suffer from above-average dry skin, so it is essential to use a moisturizer that is aligned with your skin type.  Your dermatologist may recommend you a moisturizer depending on the severity of your disorder. It is essential that you are moisturizing right after you wash your hands or take a shower or bath.  Not moisturizing after these active may exacerbate your eczema.

Bathing

When it comes to relieving the symptoms of eczema, it is effective to take baths throughout the week.  Bathing and moisturizing right after treats the dryness, as well as, relieves stress which is a trigger for eczema.  When bathing, it may help to put oatmeal or baking soda in the water to assist in the softening of your skin.
