3 Tips To Managing Hair Loss

Learn how to manage your hair loss on a daily basis.

Hair loss is a common issue that many individuals encounter, and hereditary hair loss, the most common type, affects 80 million men and women in the US.  There are also a number of conditions that affect hair that can also result in hair loss. Some people may see their hair regrow without any treatments following hair loss, while others may need treatment to help bring back their hair. Hair loss can be caused by many different things, such as illness, stress, hormonal changes, cancer treatments, or poor nutrition, among others. While not all hair loss can be stopped, there are some things you can do to help manage hair loss.

Reduce Stress

During a very stressful time in your life, your body may react by causing more of your hair to go into a resting phase, a condition called telogen effluvium. More hairs than normal are shed with this condition. Following the stressful event or period of time, most people find that their hair regrows on its own. While hair loss can itself cause quite a bit of stress, understanding that it is most likely temporary can help you manage your stress over the hair loss

Proper Nutrition

When your body does not receive the proper nutrients it needs, such as iron or protein, it may shut down hair growth. Many people find that losing a large amount of weight also results in hair loss, and those individuals who suffer from eating disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia, may also see hair loss. By reviewing what you eat and drink regularly and making sure that you are consuming the proper amounts of protein (i.e. meat, eggs, fish, nuts, and beans) and iron, you can help slow your hair loss and help it regrow.

Consult A Dermatologist

Having a dermatologic exam for your hair loss can help you understand what specific type of hair loss you have as well as what steps you can take to manage and, possibly, reverse the loss. At SCS Physicians, our board-certified dermatologists will review your medications, allergies, illness history as well as ask you a number of other questions about your lifestyle to understand why you may be experiencing hair loss. Because hair loss can be complex, it may take time to figure out the exact cause and the best course of treatment for you. Our dermatologists will work with you to find what best works for your specific case.
